Wolverines cruise past Millionaires for first ever win streak

The Warman Wolverines enjoyed an explosive third period where they tallied four goals and never looked back, knocking off the Melville Millionaires 6-3 at the Warman Home Centre Communiplex on Friday to launch their first winning streak in franchise history.

The Wolverines entered Friday’s game with great momentum following a 4-3 shootout victory over the Battlefords North Stars in their previous outing that put an end to a six-game losing skid. They took to the ice in special edition pink uniforms as part of Pink the Rink night where they helped spread awareness and raise funds in the fight against childhood cancer.

Warman started the scoring for a second straight game when Carter Bergen netted his second goal as a member of the Wolverines since being acquired from the Weyburn Red Wings. Yibin Yoo responded quickly for the Millionaires to tie the game at 1-1 with his first SJHL goal only for Peyton Allard to put one in against his former team to give Warman the lead back at 2-1.

Boston Harkness, the SJHL’s scoring leader among defensemen, knotted it up for the Millionaires again as the two teams finished the period in a 2-2 tie.

The second period saw just one goal scored as Jackson Lee gave the Millionaires their first lead of the game with his fifth goal of the campaign, and the visitors took a 3-2 lead into the second intermission. But in the third period, the Wolverines caught fire.

It began with Hudson Kerr collecting his first goal of the season to level the score once more, then Oliver Nottingham fired home his first regulation SJHL goal, taking back the lead at 4-3. Both goals came on Wolverines power plays. Late in the frame, with the Millionaires goaltender on the bench, Owen Parks went bullseye on the empty net and Ethan Dundas also found himself an empty netter to seal the game and the first winning streak in Wolverines history with both victories coming at home.

Wolverines head coach and general manager Brett Pilkington said getting back to back wins means a lot to the team and is looking for his team to they can do all again come Saturday.

“It’s good to finally see that the players get some rewards here early on in the season. It was all doom and gloom there on the results and to get these last two was big, but we got another opportunity tomorrow night to play the right way and win another hockey game,” he said.

Wolverines rookie forward Kayden Yeaman credited the team’s ability to respond to the deficit and pull through with the win. “It feels pretty good, you know, the boys stuck to the course of the whole game. You know, you’re grounded out, going down three 3 2 going to the third, so, you know, it was it good to come back with three, you know, kind of shows the strength of this team.” Yeaman said.

The Wolverines are still sitting in fourth place in the Nutrien division at 3-8-1-and are currently 12th in the overall league standings while the Millionaires suffered their fourth straight loss and occupy fourth place in the Bunge division at 4-6-1-2.
