Historic Post Office Advocacy Group outlining future plans next week

The group is seeking to preserve and restore the over century-old building, which has largely been unoccupied for well over a decade. While the landmark has undergone an extensive roof replacement recently, there is no shortage of work that could be undertaken inside the building. Despite the building’s need for some ‘TLC’, Tremblay said the landmark is worth saving.

“Dr. Yemi has had the Christmas Castle in there for a couple of years,” Tremblay said. “It’s been great, and we’re going to be doing that again this year.”

She said the Christmas Castle will be one of their first fundraisers, with proceeds going to the HPOAG’s restoration of the Historic Post Office.

“Hopefully we’ll have many more, and lots of support from our public.”

The main floor of the building has been leased to the Melfort Arts Council, Melfort Youth Evolution, and Youth Matter as they look to establish the facility as an arts and culture hub. Tremblay said she looks forward to the site being a cultural hub in the middle of downtown Melfort, and she hopes residents attend next Tuesday’s meeting with ideas for the HPOAG.

“Any suggestions people have, we’d like you to bring them forward, what you would like to see happening at the post office, it would be great.”
