Missed opportunities costly as Wolverines fall to Klippers

The Warman Wolverines had their share of chances but fell one goal short as they suffered a 3-2 shootout loss to the Kindersley Klippers on Tuesday afternoon in Kindersley.

The Klippers’ annual School Day game saw the visiting Wolverines earn eight power play opportunities but score on just one of them. Warman also outshot Kindersley 59-39 in the contest only to be stymied by Klippers goaltender Brett O’Halloran, who turned in a first star performance making 57 saves and stopping all three Wolverines shooters in the skills competition.

With hundreds of enthusiastic young fans in the stands the Klippers gave them something to cheer about just 2:12 into the game when Brock Evans rifled home his fourth goal of the season off a centering pass from Brayden Vandenbilche. The Wolverines came on strong as the period progressed and their hard work was rewarded with a penalty shot in the final minute after a Klippers player covered the puck in the crease.

However, Oliver Nottingham, the lone Wolverine to score a shootout goal this season, could not make good on the chance as he was denied by O’Halloran, and the Klippers took their 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

The Wolverines picked up the effort where they left off to start the second and just 62 seconds in, Kane Kennedy converted a cross-ice pass from Cam Sarna for his team-leading fifth goal of the season, knotting the score at one. Warman then went on to draw three consecutive power plays in the frame, but failed to score on all three. That proved costly as the Klippers would retake the lead at the 14:14 mark with Evans tallying his second of the game. Kindersley maintained the 2-1 advantage through 40 minutes of play.

Warman’s power play finally broke through at 6:39 of the third period on its sixth opportunity of the day courtesy of some excellent hand-eye coordination by Kennedy, who batted the puck out of mid-air and into the Klippers net after Vincent Palmarin’s point shot bounced off the end glass.

The visitors continued to press for the go-ahead goal but would not solve O’Halloran again. After 60 minutes of regulation plus five minutes of overtime, the game required a shootout. Evans scored to start things off, prompting a few young fans to throw hats on the ice. But even though it wasn’t technically a hat trick marker, it did stand as the difference-maker as the Wolverines’ three shooters failed to score.

O’Halloran earned his fifth win of the season, helping the Klippers improve to 8-2-5 on the season, while Griffin Wright stopped 36 shots as the Wolverines fell to 3-9-2. Kindersley was 0-for-2 on the power play.

The Wolverines will return to action on Friday when they host the Melfort Mustangs in the front end of a home-and-home weekend series. Game time is 7 p.m. from Warman Home Centre Communiplex. Every Wolverines game is broadcast free on sasknow.com.
