Playoff run leads to strong financial year for Raiders

The good times for the Prince Albert Raiders have been rolling on the ice to start the 2025-26 season, but that’s piggybacking off a great end to the 2024-25 season, where the Raiders won their first playoff series since the 2018-19 championship run.

But thanks to that playoff run, the Raiders have been enjoying some good times financially. At the team’s Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, members of the board and a few members of the public went over the financials from last year, along with re-electing board members whose terms had come up.

“The playoffs and the playoff run is everything to the organization in terms of turning a profit like we did today,” said Raiders Business Manager Mike Scissons. “I joked at the time that if Hilty (Max Hildebrand) won Game 5, I might be the first guy on the ice to hug him knowing that the game seven would probably be around the corner, and winning that Game 7 meant a round two, and anytime we can advance in the playoffs, that just leads to the long-term success of the organization, and anytime we can do that, we put ourselves in a good situation for the future.”

The biggest jumps for the Raiders in profits last season showed the big difference in attendance numbers. Between the team’s liquor sales and sales of 50/50 tickets, the team saw an increase of over $230,000 from the season before. That money is all generated in the playoffs, but the team’s success leading in brought bigger crowds and as a result bigger revenues on regular season games.

Purchases of Raiders team merchandise was another major increase last year, up just over $50,000. A lot of that excitement from last season has seen excitement in the community and solid crowds for the Raiders to start the year, and Scissons said that it’s led to a solid start to the financial year for the club.

“Going into the summer, sponsors, the community as a whole, they responded. Our season tickets are up, our sponsorship is in a great position, and we’re seeing the benefits of that on ice product as well so far. So it all goes hand in hand in hand.”

Other fundraisers such as the golf tournament, sale of specialty jerseys, and hockey camps, generated roughly the same revenue compared to the year prior.

For the rest of the year coming up, the start of the season has made it look like the Raiders could be hosting some playoff games again by the end of the season. If that is the case, Scissons can’t wait to see the way the community steps up to support the Raiders once again.

“You know what the playoff does? It reminds people that we do play in an arena where seating is still limited, and the availability of tickets becomes pretty scarce in the playoffs. There’s no better atmosphere, I’ve been in the league for 25 years almost, and I’ve been to a lot of buildings and a lot of playoff games, and hardly anything will ever touch the atmosphere in the Hauser, and when it’s full, it’s great, and if you can’t get in, it drives anticipation, it drives expectations of more involvement on people’s behalf, and we saw that again.”

The Raiders Board of Directors also re-elected Colin Fraser and Corey Crawford to their positions with the team. The full board of Directors can be found here.
