Prince Albert mother looking for better mental health supports for young daughter
A Prince Albert mother is calling for better child psychology supports, saying the lack of services are now impacting more than just her daughter’s mental health; its also affecting her physical well-being.
Carrie Schubert’s 10-year-old daughter Sophia has complex needs including a severe form of autism. She made the decision to put Sophia on medication to try and help with some of her outbursts. It’s a decision she didn’t make lightly.
“As a parent with a child with diabetes, you have no choice but to treat that diabetes with medication, right? As a child with complex needs, sometimes you also have to make that decision to put them on medication to give them a better quality of life. But medication, it just doesn’t stop at the prescription. You have to have lifestyle and follow-ups, you need to be able to have access to appropriate support services, which in Prince Albert is like zero.”
