Battleford installs new light-up crosswalks to improve safety for pedestrians

Nov 3, 2025 | 4:50 PM

Pedestrians and motorists in Battleford may notice two new LED crosswalks signs.

The new light up crosswalks were installed in common problem areas within the town where pedestrian visibility is limited. The LED signs are activated by pedestrians, providing a highly visible signal to approaching vehicles.

One of the crosswalks is located at the walking trail crossing Second Avenue and 35th Street West. A spokesperson for the Town of Battleford said this is a high traffic area where speeding is a problem. The crosswalk connects river trails and a community playground where many children are present.

The second crosswalk is located at the walking trail on First Avenue and Battle Springs by the pump track. This location also has high volumes of foot traffic due to it being in a busy residential area. Prior to the crosswalk updates, visibility was a main issue for motorists and pedestrians at this location.

There have never been any reported traffic injuries at either location, but the town’s public works department is doing their best to prevent an accident before one happens.

The town spokesperson said it’s hard to determine whether the crosswalks will make a huge difference since there are no statistics. Although many community members are happy about the new upgrades.

“We noticed these on our walk. Well done,” wrote one person on the town’s Facebook page.

“What a great idea! Thank You,” wrote another.

Funding for the upgrade was secured through the provincial traffic safety fund program. The program’s purpose is to support local, cooperative action that will increase traffic safety awareness and reduce traffic injuries and fatalities within Saskatchewan.

The town received $17,253.90 from the government program. The grant is available every year as long as the town goes through the application process. The spokesperson said the town has applied for the traffic safety grant for the past two years and has had no problem receiving money for upgrades.

Currently the Town of Battleford is not planning to install any other pedestrian safety equipment.
