NEOSS hosts Domestic Violence Awareness Walk in Melfort

Nov 4, 2025 | 1:46 PM

A walk to show support for the battle against domestic violence.

The inaugural North East Outreach and Support Services (NEOSS) Domestic Violence Awareness Walk was held in downtown Melfort on Tuesday.

NEOSS operates the domestic violence shelter in Melfort, a building that’s unfortunately a busy place.

Awareness supporters showed up to walk from Memorial Gardens down Main Street, past City Hall on Burrows Ave. W., then back to Memorial Gardens in the downtown square.

Outreach Worker Tracey Zwozdesky told northeastNOW the walk coincides with November being Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

“We’re here today to go on a walk, hold some signs, engage some [members of the] public, to bring awareness to the issue of domestic violence,” Zwozdesky explained. “It’s an important cause, it can happen to anybody in any walk of life, and so we need to bring awareness to it and let people know that there is support available.”

She said the day is all about having fun while also raising awareness and collaborating as a community.

NEOSS also provided signs for the walk, along with purple domestic violence awareness pins, wristbands, and snacks.

Sadly, Saskatchewan is no stranger to domestic or intimate partner violence. In 2023, the province had the highest provincial rate of intimate partner violence in the country. The RCMP revealed that in 2024, there were over 9,000 violent crime offences committed by former intimate partners or family members, up by almost 700 just three years earlier. The number of offences accounted for 52 per cent of all reported violence in the province in 2024.

Domestic violence also has a scope beyond physical. It can include psychological abuse, criminal harassment, threats, or even sharing intimate photos or videos without consent.
