Humboldt Broncos goaltender Charlie Tritt spent the entire month of October stopping pucks for cancer research.

Tritt participated in the October Saves Goalie Challenge, which saw him fundraise for every save he made during the month of October.

“I had heard about this challenge and had done some similar kinds of fundraisers on my own back when I was in high school, so I decided that this year I wanted to participate in it and see how much I could raise,” Tritt told northeastNOW.

“I think it’d be pretty hard to find someone who doesn’t know someone who’s had cancer, and for me personally, three of my grandparents have had cancer. Unfortunately, two of them passed away, but luckily, my grandmother is a cancer survivor, so this initiative was just really important for me to do and just support the cause.”

In six games during the month of October, Tritt made 214 saves and raised over $1,250 ($1,289 total), which ranked 12th in Canada as a solo fundraiser.

The October Saves organization, which began in 2014, has raised $4.2 million and counting since its inception.

“Every dollar and every donation helps, so I’m just super happy with how it went, and just extremely thankful to everyone who supported and donated. Obviously, it’s a special program, and I hope to continue to do it as long as I play,” added Tritt.

“Some stuff is bigger than hockey, and to me, this was one of those things. The boys were great in supporting me, and even the organization and the league were great at spreading the word. Hopefully, some kids saw me doing it and will be inspired to do it in the future… I actually even had one goalie reach out to me about it and get into it this year.”

Tritt plans to wear specialized pink goalie gear in future challenges and said that the October Saves organization was very helpful with his fundraising efforts.
