Midweek Preview: Raiders prepare for difficult middle stretch in U.S. trip

The Prince Albert Raiders have been on the road for seven days and played three games. Now, they will gear up for two of the toughest games in the Western Conference. On Tuesday, the battle between the two best winning percentages in the league will take place as the Raiders face the Everett Silvertips, and on Wednesday the Raiders travel to Portland to take on the Winterhawks.

The Raiders are coming off of their first loss of the season in regulation time to the Tri-City Americans – 6-2 on Saturday. Before that, the Raiders had a 15 game point streak that finished with three straight wins over the Moose Jaw Warriors at home, and wins on the road over the Lethbridge Hurricanes and Spokane Chiefs.

On the season, the Raiders sit second in the Eastern Conference with a 12-1-3 record, three points back of the Edmonton Oil Kings with four games in hand. This will also be the first game back for Raiders Ben Harvey, Brock Cripps, and head coach Ryan McDonald after bringing home gold and silver from the U17 World Hockey Challenge.

Tuesday vs. Everett

The Everett Silvertips won’t be fresh coming into Tuesday’s game, and in fact, will be trying to soothe some bus legs after a Monday matchup in Vancouver against the Giants where they earned a 2-0 win. The game winner came in the final five minutes of the game along with an empty netter.

On the season, the Silvertips have a record of 15-2-1, tied with the Edmonton Oil Kings for the top spot in the WHL with three games in hand.

In the special teams battle, the Raiders powerplay has not had many chances in their last three games and as a result, the Raiders don’t have a powerplay goal on the road trip so far. At 26.9 %, the Raiders powerplay has now dropped to sixth in the league while the penalty kill, the second least tested in the league with only 49 times shorthanded, sits sixth in the league at 81.6 %.

As for the Silvertips, they sit 11th in the league powerplay rankings at 25.7 %, while their penalty kill is 10th at 78.5 % so far this year.

Riley Boychuk has reclaimed his spot at the top of the Raiders scoring with 3G-15A-18P on the year. Brayden Dube is back in second with 6G-11A-17P, and Aiden Oiring sits third with 6G-10A-16P.

After having his 14 game point streak snapped, Riley Boychuk has started a new one with 1G-1A in his last two games. Both Jonah Sivertson and Daxon Rudolph also have 1G-1A in their last two games.

For the Silvertips, Finnish born rookie Matias Vanhanen leads the scoring with 4G-25A-29P on the year, followed by Seattle Kraken second round draft pick and fellow Finn, Julius Miettinen with 12G-16A-28P. From there it’s a bit of a drop off to third where Shea Busch sits with 13G-5A-18P.

The empty net goal in Vancouver kept Matias Vanhanen’s point streak alive with 3G-8A in his last six games. Carter Bear has 0G-4A in his last two games.

Raiders are bringing in goaltender of the week, Michal Orsulak with his 6-0-2 record on the year, fifth in the league 0.918 save percentage, and league leading two shutouts. Behind him is Dimitri Fortin with a 5-1-1 record, one shutout, and a 0.880 save percentage.

As for the Silvertips, Raiden LeGall has the most wins in the league with a 11-0-2 record, second best save percentage at 0.920, but no shutouts this year. He’s backed up by Anders Miller with a 0.869 save percentage and a 4-2-0 record, one of those losses coming when he was still with the Calgary Hitmen.

Wednesday vs. Portland

As for Wednesday’s game against the Winterhawks, the team from Portland is well rested having not played since Saturday. They’ve lost their last three games. That streak includes a 4-3 loss at home to Spokane, a 6-3 loss to Wenatchee on the road, and a 6-2 loss at home to the Prince George Cougars.

On the season, the Winterhawks are sitting at an even 0.500 record with a record of 9-9-0, tying them with the Spokane Chiefs for sixth in the Western Conference.

The Winterhawks powerplay are ranked 12th in the league at 25 % on the year with the second most chances in the league on the powerplay. As for the penalty kill, they sit 17th at 71.6 %.

Leading the scoring for the Winterhawks is Pittsburgh Penguins fifth round pick Ryan Miller with 6G-15A-21P on the year. Tied for second is Vegas Golden Knights sixth round pick Alex Weiermair with 8G-11A-19P and Jordan Duguay at 6G-13A-19P.

Miller also has the longest point streak going for the Winterhawks with 5G-8A in his last 11 games. After that, Nathan Free has 1G-2A in his last three games and Will McLaughlin has 1G-1A in his last two.

In goal, the Winterhawks have Slovkian goaltender Ondrej Štěbeták in his second season with a record of 8-7-0 and a 0.887 save percentage. Behind him are two rookies, 2007 born Cruz Chase with a 0-1-0 record in three games and a 0.889 save percentage, and 2009 born Blake Clark with a 1-1-0 record and a 0.871.

The Raiders will first head to Everett to take on the Silvertips on Tuesday, and then to Portland to battle the Winterhawks on Wednesday. Both games will be broadcast on 900 CKBI with pregame shows beginning at 8:30 p.m. Saskatchewan time, and puck drop at 9:00 p.m.
