Kitsaki Hall to be renovated or rebuilt

Kitsaki Hall will undergo either a major renovation or be replaced with a new building.

Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River MP Buckley Belanger was in La Ronge on Nov. 8 to announce $800,000 in federal funding for the aging Kitsaki Hall. The project was identified as a priority under the federal budget’s $51 billion Build Communities Strong Fund.

“Kitsaki Hall is a hall we use for many purposes,” explained Lac La Ronge Indian Band Chief Tammy Cook-Searson.

“It has been there for many, many years and we have our wakes and funeral services there. We have celebrations there and there are community events held at Kitsaki Hall. Sometimes, we also use it as a homeless shelter when it gets really, really cold and we have a lot of people we aren’t able to accommodate in our temporary shelter.”

Cook-Searson noted La Ronge band councillors are currently finalizing a plan to either renovate the existing building or proceed with a new build. There is no timeline for when work is expected to start.

“We do have that money we put aside too for community projects,” she said.

“The $40 million that was set aside from the agricultural benefits, so La Ronge’s portion of that is about $11 million so they’ll be looking at the community’s input. I believe they’re going to be having a community meeting, not only in La Ronge but all surrounding communities, to get input from community members as to what they would like to build with that. I know part of the $800,000 we received from the federal government they’ll be enhancing that, whether it’s the current hall or having a rebuild.”
