The increase in the budget for 2026 that is being proposed by City of Prince Albert administration is about $4.4 million over last year’s budget.

Several large ticket items are responsible for the majority of the $4.4 million. That includes $1 million to rehabilitate the 6th Ave. viaduct, $524,000 for operation of the Lake Country Co-op Leisure Centre (which includes savings from not operating the Frank Dunn pool or the Dave Steuart Arena), $2.5 million in salaries, wages and benefits for staff and an increase of $900,000 in the police budget.

“City’s administration has undertaken a comprehensive and diligent review of all departmental budgets to present a streamlined financial plan that reflects both fiscal responsibility and community priorities,” said Ramona Fauchoux, Director of Financial Services, in a news release.

The staff said it found about $2 million in savings by cutting costs across all departments where it could.

“This year’s budget reflects council’s commitment to being fiscally responsible while continuing to provide the essential services our residents rely on every day,” said City Manager Sherry Person. “We recognize the financial challenges facing households due to sustained inflation in recent years, and we have worked diligently to minimize the impact on residents while ensuring the city remains on a stable and sustainable financial path.”

The digital budget is available on the city’s website. It will be reviewed by the budget committee, which is all of council, starting Wednesday, Nov. 19.

Meetings continue on Thursday and Friday all day and may continue into December if needed.
