Prince Albert senior sprints to photo finish at International competition

At the prime age of 72, Prince Albert’s Katherine Borysiuk is putting her best foot forward.

The passionate runner recently travelled to Mexico City for the 2025 North Central Caribbean Masters Association (NCCMA) Championships and won multiple medals. The event marked her first international competition.

“I’m gonna say the highlight was holding the Canadian flag near Remembrance Day, because that really means a lot to me. What happened many years ago is a reason we can do things like that,” she said. “It was really emotional for me.”

The competition, which featured over a 1,000 athletes, ran from Nov 6 to 9. Borysiuk’s silver medals came in the 100m, 200m, 400m sprints and both the 100m and 400m relay events.

“I was really happy with getting two personal bests. They were both photo finishes.”

Borysiuk only started competitive running a year ago and in that time won gold at the Canadian Masters event in Winnipeg last February in the 60, 70 and 400 meter dash, and also gold and silver at the provincial master event last June in Saskatoon.

When asked what her favorite part about the experience in Mexico City was, Borysiuk revealed it was representing Canada and being with other people that she became friends with after the event – not just from Canada, but from other countries. Borysiuk was the lone competitor from Saskatchewan and one of only 35 Canadians,

“It’s a different sort of competitiveness. It’s more camaraderie as you get into the masters,” she explained.

Going forward, Borysiuk aims to compete next September at the World Masters which will be in South Korea. She was also asked if she thinks her success can inspire others.

“In the Saskatchewan Seniors Fitness Association, there’s different events that are not just sporting events, so there’s room for everyone to start and be part of something,” she said.

Borysiuk gave a special shoutout to her Coach Judy Wawryk, the Saskatoon Masters Top Notch Club, brother Bill Cathcart, Zoe Health Center and chiropractor Janelle Braun.
