A third-period rally proved to be too little, too late as the Warman Wolverines dropped a 5-4 decision to the Weyburn Red Wings in the first of back-to-back games in Weyburn on Friday.

Kane Kennedy recorded the first hat trick in franchise history with the last two goals coming in the final frame as the Wolverines tried to battle back from a 5-1 deficit before running out of time. Peyton Allard also scored and Ethan Dundas had two assists in Warman’s fourth consecutive loss.

The Red Wings opened the scoring for the 12th time in 17 games this season with Josh Sale wiring home his seventh goal of the campaign less than four and a half minutes into the contest. Weyburn then doubled its lead with less than two minutes left in the first period as Trennen Redlick capitalized on a breakaway chance with his third of the year. But in the closing moments of the frame, the Wolverines forced a turnover at the Wings blue line and Kennedy scored with just 0.2 seconds left to make it a 2-1 game after one.

Warman would generate 19 shots on goal in the second but it was Weyburn doing all the scoring. Callas Pierce restored the Wings’ two-goal cushion at the 8:18 mark and less than three minutes later, Jaxson Doyle pushed the lead to 4-1. The defenceman, who had scored once in 13 games entering Friday’s contest, then scored his second of the game on a shorthanded rush in the final minute of the period.

With the Red Wings seemingly in command the Wolverines refused to go quietly. Allard netted his fourth goal of the season just 12 seconds into the third, then Kennedy buried his second of the night at the 5:29 mark. After that, Weyburn tightened up its defensive game, with goaltender Preston Patenaude coming up with a few key stops along the way.

Late in regulation, the Wings hemmed the Wolverines in their own zone, preventing goaltender Taye Timmerman from leaving the net until there was less than a minute remaining. Kennedy completed his hat trick with the extra attacker on the ice but the goal came with just 6.6 seconds left. Warman won the ensuing faceoff but time expired before they could get a chance for an equalizer.

The Wolverines outshot the Red Wings 43-37 on the night with Timmerman absorbing the loss in a 32-save performance. Patenaude earned his sixth win of the season, making 39 stops. Both teams went 0-for-4 on the power play.

The defeat drops the Wolverines to 4-13-2 on the season while the Red Wings are now 12-3-2.They’ll meet again on Saturday at Whitecap Resources Centre. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. Fans can listen for free on SaskNow.com.
