A Saskatoon-based lawyer who specializes in family law and child and family services litigation has been appointed as a Judge of the Court of King’s Bench in Prince Albert.

Sheri L. Woods replaced Justice L.W. Zuk, who resigned on April 8, 2024.

“I wish Justice Woods every success as she takes on her new role. I am confident she will serve the people of Saskatchewan well as a member of His Majesty’s Court of King’s Bench for Saskatchewan,” said Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada Sean Fraser.

Woods was appointed under the judicial application process established in 2016, which emphasizes transparency, merit and the diversity of the Canadian population.

Woods graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 2009 and was called to the bar the following year.

She co-founded a law firm in 2013 that became Woods Law Office, described as a boutique firm, that she maintained until being named a judge.

For the last 10 years, she played a key role in developing the Counsel for Children Program and has represented children in the care of Social Services across the province.

Woods also worked with Indigenous Governing Bodies and represented child and family services agencies form Treaties 4, 6, 8 and 10.

Federal judicial appointments are made by the Governor General, acting on the advice of the federal cabinet and recommendations from the Minister of Justice.

The Judicial Advisory Committees across Canada play a key role in evaluating judicial applications. There are 17 Judicial Advisory Committees, with each province and territory represented.
