Timmerman terrific as Wolverines down Bombers

A strong showing by Taye Timmerman coupled with some timely scoring proved to be the difference for the Warman Wolverines in a 5-2 win over the Flin Flon Bombers on Tuesday night at the Warman Home Centre Communiplex.

Pherson Loehndorf scored twice as part of a three-point effort while Riley Rich-Holden and Kane Kennedy each tallied a goal and an assist but the night belonged to Timmerman, who made 45 saves to backstop Warman’s second straight victory over a division leader following Saturday’s defeat of the Weyburn Red Wings.

“It felt great, I felt loose. I like games where I get a lot of shots so it was a good game,” Timmerman said.

The Bombers, who beat the Wolverines twice in Flin Flon in early October, got off to a good start with Sam Ward scoring his fourth goal of the season just over seven minutes into the game, however, the lead did not last for long. Less than three minutes later, Rich-Holden rifled his eighth goal of the year past Bombers goaltender Devin Peck to level the score at one.

Late in the period, Warman drew a pair of power plays and on the second one, with 58 seconds left in the frame, Oliver Nottingham shoveled a rebound home for his third of the campaign, putting the Wolverines ahead 2-1 after one despite being outshot 18-9.

The Bombers continued to pepper Timmerman with pucks in the second but the Wolverines extended their lead at the 4:16 mark as Loehndorf pinched in from the blue line and finished off a nice feed from Cam Sarna for his fourth of the year and the only goal of the period.

The pace of the game slowed somewhat in the third but Flin Flon kept pressing the issue and Ryan Ulmer cut the score to 3-2 with his third goal of the season midway through the frame. The Bombers pushed for the equalizer but Timmerman would not be beaten again, holding the fort until Loehndorf and Kennedy scored empty-net goals to salt away the victory.

“I thought the team played really good in front of me, even though (the Bombers) had a lot of shots. I like how the team played today,” Timmerman said.

The netminder earned his fourth win of the season while Warman improved to 6-13-2 on the year. Peck made 19 saves as Flin Flon fell to 12-7-1 with all eight losses coming on the road. The Wolverines went 1-for-4 on the power play; the Bombers were scoreless on three opportunities.

The teams will square off in Warman again on Wednesday to close out their four-game season series, with puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m. Fans can listen to the live broadcast on SaskNow.com.
