Young hockey player from MGBHLM recruited for U13 World Cup Series

“He is very grateful,” said Jolene Starblanket after the recent announcement of her son’s recruitment for the U13 Bauer World Cup Series in Paris, France.

Starblanket’s son, Logan Pahsaknunk is an 11-year-old boy from Mosquito Grizzly Bear’s Head Lean Man First Nation (MGBHLM). Hockey quickly became his passion when he first put on a pair of skates at the age of two and is currently playing as a defenceman for the Battleford Barons.

Starblanket said her son was first introduced to the sport by his father, Derek Starblanket.

“My husband took all the courses and everything to be a coach and to be a personal trainer just for Logan,” she said. “Now Logan is benefitting from Derek.”

Over the summer, Pahsaknunk attended the Coast 2 Coast international hockey tournament in B.C. where he played in hopes of attracting potential scouts. To Starblanket’s surprise, her son caught the attention of a representative from MCN Senators, a US-based hockey organization.

“Some guy came up to me, introduced himself and said, ‘Just letting you know, I have an eye out for your son. I see his potential as a defender.’ He liked Logan’s style. And then he’s like, I’ll keep in touch,” said Starblanket.

In October, the scout contacted Pahsaknunk’s family to let them know he was selected for the World Cup Series.

“Logan’s reaction was just like, oh, are you sure? And I’m like, yeah, I’m sure. He was so humble about it, but he is very grateful,” she said.

Pahsaknunk’s mother and cousin will be joining him in Paris during April of 2026 to help cheer him on. The trip will be funded, excluding plane tickets, by the MCN Senators including hotel, food, and team building activities the players will participate in, in hopes of building lifelong friendships.

This opportunity will hopefully help to kickstart the young athlete’s dream of one day making it big in the world of hockey.

“We are just going day by day. What Logan really wants is to go play in Europe. So that’s one of his goals or NHL,” said Starblanket.

Pahsaknunk is excited for the entire experience of attending the World Cup Series and is hoping for good memories on and off of the ice.
