Nov 28, 2025 | 2:00 PM

History is being made in Prince Albert this year.

The Broadway North Youth Company’s production of Matilda Jr. includes two casts. Director Kayleigh Skomorowski is making her debut with the company and said the reason for the two casts (120 kids) is simply to accommodate the volume of interest. The idea was ultimately agreed upon by the creative team.

“As a parent of a child who wanted to be involved, it was an easy decision. Like yes, let’s try it, let’s give more kids opportunities. And it’s been been a lot of fun and the benefit of them learning by watching and reflecting and having a counterpart that they’re learning alongside, it’s just it’s been great,” she said.

Matilda is about a a brilliant and determined girl, who discovers her extraordinary abilities and stands up to the terrifying Miss Trunchbull with the help of her friends and the kind-hearted Miss Honey.

The show opens Friday night at the EA Rawlinson Centre. Skomorowski, who is a teacher at Carlton Comprehensive School, and brings lots of theatre and band experience, said she’s had a great time working with all the young people who are all excited and passionate about theater.

Confirming the plot follows the well known Roald Dahl story, and takes a bit from the musical that’s now in Netflix, Skomorowski said she too grew up as a big fan and so now being a part of the show is a dream come true. She added Matilda is a story about kids and their power and brings hope.

“Just all of the themes and all of that stuff has been really great and just to have those conversations with kids about their power and their themselves as agents of change, has been fun.”

Blakely Prodaehl, 13, plays one of the two Matilda characters and since starting acting at the age of 6, has previously been in six Broadway North Youth shows.

“It’s just been amazing. I get to work with such amazing people and I get to have a double to watch. I just want to give her a little shout out, and it’s just been so amazing to work with everybody and her.
It’s been so great.”

Prodaehl was also asked why she thought people should come to the show.

“I think because it’s such a magical experience to come and see how the kids react and how people react to how good this show is going to be.”

Following Friday night’s opening, there are matinee and evening shows on Nov. 29, Dec. 5. and Dec. 6.
