Mustangs defeat Wolverines in shortened game

The Melfort Mustangs held onto a big lead in a shortened game as they rolled to a 6-2 victory over the Warman Wolverines on Saturday night.

The Wolverines visited Melfort for the second time this season after falling 3-0 to the Melville Millionaires at home on Wednesday. The last time the two teams met at the Northern Lights Palace was back on November 1 when the Mustangs cruised to a 5-3 victory.

The Mustangs started the scoring in the first period when Bo Eisner ripped a shot past Taye Timmerman. The lead didn’t last long, however, as Karson Kerbes found the back of the net for his third goal of the season, tying the score at 1-1 after 20 minutes of play.

In the second period, Danton Cox found himself a golden opportunity as Kerbes was called for tripping on the rush which granted Melfort a penalty shot. Cox delivered with his fourth goal of the season to put the Mustangs back on top. Austin Shepherd joined in on the scoring with number four on the season, an unassisted goal to put Melfort up 3-1 after two periods of play.

The Mustangs picked up right where they left off to begin the third period when Jack McHarg scored a memorable first SJHL goal on the backhand following a turnover to push the lead further at 4-1. Kanyan Unger put an end to the Mustangs scoring streak when he also netted his first SJHL goal for his hometown team to trim the advantage to two. But Kaleb Binner and Reis Nyland replied to stretch the advantage to 6-2.

That’s when the referees noticed an area near a logo on the ice that was unsafe for the players. The officials and rink attendants tried to repair the damage but were unable to do so and after some discussion, the decision was made to call the game with 5:39 remaining in regulation time, putting an end to the Mustangs’ four-game losing streak.

Kason Kobelka backstopped the Mustangs to victory, denying 25 of 27 shots faced and Taye Timmerman made 27 stops in defeat. The Wolverines are now on a four game losing streak and are 1-2 against the Mustangs the season while having a record of 2-7-1 against UPL Division opponents.

Warman remains fourth in the Nutrien Division at 6-17-2, falling back to 12th overall in the league standings. The Mustangs sit 10th league wide and 3rd in the UPL at 9-10-1-2. The Wolverines are on the road again Sunday when they visit the Yorkton Terriers at 3 p.m. Every Wolverines home and away game can be heard for free on SaskNow.com.
