The Hawks may not have been at their best Tuesday on the road against La Ronge, but Nipawin managed to hang on for a 3-2 victory.

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) teams have faced off four times this season with Nipawin winning all four contests. Despite the win, Assistant Coach Derek Hutton wasn’t overly pleased with his team’s effort.

“I am always happy getting a win and the two points, but I just felt like it was too much of an up-and-down game for us,” he said on the postgame show on 750 Beach Radio. “We’re expecting our guys to come out and put the effort in for a full 60 minutes and I felt like we didn’t do that tonight.”

Nipawin jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, Mason Karakochuk scored his seventh goal of the year and Tiernan Ryan added his third SJHL goal giving the Hawks a couple goal cushion. Will Whitter scored late in the second period expanding the lead to 3-0 with his 10th goal of the season.

The Ice Wolves didn’t quit; Trevor Oishi cut the lead to 3-1 with under two minutes remaining busting the shutout bid for rookie Colten Scott in the Hawks net. Jacob Morrison cut the lead to one with under a minute to play, but the Ice Wolves couldn’t get the equalizer. Hutton admitted the team may have been setting their sights on a weekend home-and-home matchup with the Bombers before finishing off La Ronge.

“Maybe we are looking a little bit to forward to the weekend with two of the top teams in the league going at it, but we just must stay present. We have to make sure we focus on the task at hand,” he said.

Scott made 42 saves in the win. The 18-year-old Calgary product is 5-1 on the season backing up Gage Roberts. Hutton added the Hawks got a big game from the rookie in the win.

“We’ve got two pretty good goalies here,” Hutton said. “Scotty stood on his head. It’s too bad we kind of stopped working in the third period and didn’t get him the shutout there.”

Nipawin sits third in the SJHL overall standings, one point back of Weyburn with a game in hand. The Hawks are two points back of Flin Flon with two less games played. The Hawks host the Bombers Friday and will travel to Flin Flon Saturday.
