Coming into Saturday’s action against the Red Deer Rebels, the Prince Albert Raiders were in need of a win to get their momentum rolling again. The Raiders dominated the game, but it wasn’t until the third period before they were able to blow the doors open and pull away for a 7-3 win.

The Raiders opened the scoring early with a bit of luck. The Rebels were trying to clear the puck, and the puck came into the middle of the blueline. Linden Burrett coming into the zone from the bench, and he wound up to the ceiling before blasting a slapshot wide of the goal, right into the shin pads of Jonah Sivertson, and he redirected it into the net for his ninth of the year.

It was Teddy Bear Toss night for the Rebels, and they scored at the 10:25 mark to send the bears flying. A point shot was stopped by Dimitri Fortin, but a scrum at the side of the net found the puck behind Fortin and Landon MacSwain potted in the back of the net.

The Rebels then took the lead at the 13:36 mark when defenceman Nate Yellowaga picked the puck up behind his own net, and then went for a skate. He cut to the middle of the ice through the neutral zone, then cut left as he entered the Raiders zone and fired a great shot to give the Rebels the lead in a period the Raiders overall dominated.

Early in the second period, the Raiders were able to tie it. Linden Burrett started the play again with a slapshot from the left point that missed wide of the goal, but the rebound came out to the slot perfectly. Owen Corkish didn’t pick up an assist, but he made a crucial play tying up a defender’s stick to allow the puck to come to Maddix McCagherty, and he ripped the wrist shot off the crossbar and in for his second goal as a Raider in two nights, and his eighth of the season at 1:31.

Then at 9:43, Connor Howe worked the puck out of the right side corner back towards the point, and he dropped the puck on the wall for Linden Burrett again. Burrett took the puck back down into the corner, then sent a great pass out front for Ethan Bibeau, and he tipped it in for his first goal of the season after missing the first 20 games.

After 2: Raiders 3 – 2 Rebels, shots 15-3 Raiders, 33-12 Raiders overall

The Raiders only had one powerplay in the first two periods that was unsuccessful, but the second powerplay started a run early in the third. At the 3:33 mark, it took the Raiders eight seconds for the Raiders to find the back of the net when Brock Cripps sent a pass from the middle of the blueline to Daxon Rudolph at the left point. Rudolph went across the ice to Riley Boychuk, and he went right back to Rudolph on the left, and Rudolph fired a great wrist shot for his eighth of the season.

The powerplay went to work again at the 5:00 mark when all five guys on the ice had crucial passes. It started at the right point with Boychuk, then Cripps at the top of the blueline, then Rudolph who had snuck down into the left corner, and he found Max Heise in the slot, then Heise found Aiden Oiring on the back door who tapped in his 10th of the season.

The Raiders powerplay continued to dominate at the 9:07 mark when Oiring picked the puck up at centre on a bit of a broken play, and he fed Rudolph up the left wall. Rudolph entered the blueline, then waited for the trailing Max Heise and gave it to him in the top of the slot, and Heise fired a wrist shot for his 12th of the season.

The Rebels got one back on a powerplay of their own when Nate Yellowaga brought the puck over the blueline and tried to shoot, but he fanned on it and the puck came right to Matej Mikes who took advantage of Fortin committing to the first shot and fired to get the Rebels back on the board at 12:03.

The Rebels pulled their goaltender in the final three minutes with the powerplay, but shortly after the powerplay ended, Owen Corkish took the puck away at the blueline and fired it down the ice into the empty cage to give the Raiders the 7-3 lead at the 19:37 mark.

FINAL: Raiders 7 – 3 Rebels, shots 10-6 Raiders, 43-18 Raiders overall

Aiden Oiring joins Max Heise as the only Raiders with 10 goals on the season. Brayden Dube and Jonah Sivertson both have nine on the year, while Daxon Rudolph, Maddix McCagherty, and Evan Smith also have eight.

The Raiders will play one more game in their three games in three nights stretch on Sunday against the Edmonton Oil Kings. The puck drops at 5:00 p.m. Saskatchewan time.
