Kam backstops Bruins to win over Wolverines

Nathan Kam stood tall, denying 31 of 32 shots faced as the Estevan Bruins came through with a 3-1 victory in their first ever meeting with the Warman Wolverines on Saturday night in Warman.

The Wolverines had their sights set on a second straight win after a 2-1 victory over the La Ronge Ice Wolves one night earlier that put a five-game losing skid in the rearview mirror. Estevan was looking to get back onto the win column after falling 5-3 to the Battlefords North Stars on Friday night.

The Bruins started the scoring with what proved to be the only goal of the first period when Oliver Kramp found the back of the net for his third of the season to put the visitors up 1-0 after 20 minutes of play.

The Wolverines got even in the middle frame when Carter Bergen fired one past Kam for his sixth goal of the season to knot up the game at one. That tie score would not last long, however, as Matthew Ronn blasted his first goal of the the campaign to put the Bruins ahead 2-1 through two periods.

Warman battled for an equalizer in the third but Estevan sealed the deal on an empty net marker by Ewan Rennie, his team leading 21st goal of the season, giving the Bruins the victory in their first ever meeting with the Wolverines.

Warman fell to 7-19-2 with the loss and occupies fourth place in the Nutrien Division and 11th overall in the SJHL standings while Estevan is second in the Bunge Division and fourth overall in the SJHL at 15- 8-2-1.

The Wolverines continue their five-game homestand next Friday when they open a two-game weekend set against the Weyburn Red Wings. Every Wolverines home and away game can be heard for free on SaskNow.com.
