Hawks fall in Flin Flon; snap six game winning streak

Dec 8, 2025 | 3:00 PM

The Hawks had their six game winning streak snapped Saturday as Nipawin and the Flin Flon Bombers split a weekend home-and-home set.

Going into Friday’s Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) game between the two top ranked clubs, both had five game win streaks. The Hawks won on Friday 5-2 on home ice and fell 5-2 on the road in the rematch.

Saturday’s result was the 13th straight loss for the Hawks at the Whitney Forum. Of the 13 losses many were by wide margins since Tad Kozun took over head coaching duties in Nipawin. After winning on home ice Friday, he said his team was confident trying to get over this major hurdle but couldn’t hang onto the lead.

“I thought we started slow, but we get a big goal from Mason Karakochuk to get this thing started,” he said on the postgame show on 750 Beach Radio. “You get the lead, and you go in the room up 1-0, you are happy with that. I don’t remember the last time we even had a lead here. In the end I just think we ran out of gas, we are pretty short on bodies right now.”

Karakochuk scored both Hawks goals in the loss.

Nipawin felt like Saturday’s game was their best opportunity to snap a lengthy skid in Manitoba. The last Hawks win versus the Bombers on the road was Feb. 15, 2022. Kozun turned to the clubs powerplay for the blame. The Hawks had half a dozen powerplays in the game, including a two man advantage late in the second that went unused.

“We’ve got to be able to get one on there especially with a five-on-three. It wasn’t a long five-on-three because we took a penalty, but you get one there and we tie it back up. Unfortunately, our powerplay just hasn’t gotten it done here lately,” Kozun huffed.

The kept the Bombers at bay, the score spread out with a late empty net goal and another after Colten Scott was put back in during the final minute.

Nipawin is off until Wednesday, the Weyburn Red Wings make will face the Hawks Wednesday at the Centennial Arena. As of Monday, the Red Wings are second overall, one point behind Flin Flon and one up on the third place Hawks. Faceoff is 7 p.m.
