Prince Albert drug trafficker receives five-year prison sentence

Prior to sentencing a man to five years in prison for drug trafficking, a Prince Albert judge who was commenting on the amount of drugs and cash seized, said it’s the type of case that affects everyone in the community.

Judge Mary McAuley’s remark was heard Tuesday afternoon at the conclusion of Montana Primeau’s sentencing hearing at Prince Albert Provincial Court. Guilty pleas were entered to possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking and possession of the proceeds of crime over $5,000.

The 32-year-old was one of three people arrested after a near two-month long investigation by members of the Crime Reduction and Saskatchewan Trafficking teams.

The end result of the investigation, which included surveillance and the execution of search warrants at four separate residences, was the seizure of more three kilograms of cocaine, over $69,000 in cash, various items related to drug trafficking and a gun.

The cash and the majority of the drugs were found in the bedroom of the home where Primeau and his partner lived. The cash was found stashed in drawers under their bed and there was over two kilograms of cocaine in the closet.

In addition to various transactions in the city, police also observed a vehicle making regular trips to Edmonton for what was believed to be to pick up more drugs to sell.

Prosecutor Margaret Sproule explained depending on how the drugs were sold, the street value could be anywhere from $150,000 to $340,000.

Primeau’s lawyer Sam Jomha stated his client was not a sophisticated criminal and has been struggling with substance abuse.

In response Judge McAuley said Primeau may not sophisticated, but the operation was and has a big impact on the city’s addictions crisis.

“It’s leading to a level we’ve never seen,” she said. “It’s very appalling.”

When provided the opportunity to speak, Primeau apologized to his kids, his mother and to his partner for the harm he has caused.

“I pray they will forgive me one day,” he said.

Primeau was granted 28 days of remand credit and upon his eventual release will be subject to a 10-year firearms prohibition.

Also accused was Primeau’s partner Janie Farrow whose charges were dropped on Tuesday. Sproule explained that while she was seen driving Primeau to various drug transactions and would have been aware of what was happening, she was not an active player in the operation.

This was also supported by the investigating officers.

Another accused, Jordan McDonald, was granted bail last week and is scheduled to make his next court appearance on Dec. 15.

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of 34-year-old Evan Halkett.
