The cheer season kicked off on Dec. 6 with the Battle at the Border in Lloydminster, Alta. and the Aerial Cheer Athletics started positively sending a couple of teams to the competition.

The U12 team Nova came in third place out of six teams and hit zero, while their U16 team eclipse exceeded their expectations and came in first place out of six teams. They also hit zero and even received the Judges Choice Award out of 23 teams.

Aerial Cheer Athletics owner Rena Fauchon talked about the the announcement of the team winning. “It was awesome just watching them on the mat. All the teams are on there and they do the awards from sixth place to first place. It just kept getting six, five and it was like, where are we? Then we won first and it was awesome, they were so happy.”

Fauchon also spoke about what it meant for the club that both squads hit zero.

“Both teams had really good runs. So, you knew it made us proud as coaches that we knew they had hit zero. No one fell, no stunts fell so it was just a good feeling to start with.”

Last season was the inaugural year for the club, and they had 14 athletes and one team. This year, they were able to more than double that with 33 athletes and three teams. Fauchon credited the team’s success and the community feel last year to being able to get so many more this year.

“I think we just had an awesome year last year. Our first year was really good. All the athletes and their families were so awesome. Cheer is a lot of fun; it’s a lot of hard work. It’s a very demanding sport on your body, but we try to make it as fun as possible for our athletes too. I think just having the community share Facebook post and things like that, I think that really helped.”

The mentality around the club was also different heading into this season with a year under their belts. While the club had a cheer background as Fauchon helped with John Paul II cheer for 15 years, she said that the team was more confident leading up to this competition.

“We were a little unsure of how it would look going to competitions as a club, just trying to feel it out last year and trying to make the best of it. This year we have more coaches, we’re just a little more prepared,” she said.

Fauchon made sure to credit the coaching staff for the club’s early success.

“Our coaches are super awesome. We have six coaches and they’re really great. From our community, they’re all from North Battleford. They were on the John Paul Cheer team, just really want to highlight that, we’re all NB people,” she said.

The club’s next competition will be on January 10, which is called Winter Knockout in Warman.
