SPSA purchasing land, expanding La Ronge Fire Base

The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) is in the process of subdividing land adjacent to its La Ronge Fire Base ahead of a major purchase expected next year.

At a regular meeting on Monday, council voted to direct administration to notify the Ministry of Government Relations to recommend approval of the subdivision of the town-owned lands.

On Dec. 9, 2024, council approved the sale of 49 acres site of land on the west side of Poirier Street to the SPSA to allow it to expand its fire base operations. As part of the arrangement, the SPSA needed to complete the subdivision, which can be an expensive and time consuming process.

The process and sale is expected to be finalized by the end of 2026.

“This land will be used for a variety of purposes, including training, surge capacity during wildfire season, and to ensure safe flight paths for helicopters,” a statement to larongeNOW from the SPSA reads.

With the additional space, the SPSA will no longer need to use space in the Mel Hegland Uniplex parking lot or the Elk’s Fair Grounds like they’ve needed to do in previous years.

While the SPSA works to complete the subdivision, work has already started to expand the current building with new operational space and additional offices.

“This work started in the fall and will conclude in the spring of 2026,” the statement noted.

“The existing building was built in 1994, and expansion is required for the SPSA to continue to provide support to Northern Saskatchewan. Several bases province-wide have been identified for improvements as part of our continuous development initiatives.”

larongeNOW inquired about the cost of the two projects, but the amount wasn’t available at this time.
