Approaching the halfway mark in the Twin Rivers Hockey League (TRHL), the Rosthern Wheat Kings are standing alone at the top of the standings and are considered one of the best teams in the province.

The Wheat Kings are 7-0-0 (W-L-OTL) to start the season and are one win shy of tying a franchise record for their best start to a season since the league was founded in 2016, when they began the campaign at 8-0-0 in the 2019-20 season.

In their seven games so far, Rosthern has outscored their opponents 47-20, winning three of those games by four or more goals. Their biggest victory was against Hanley on Nov. 1, where they won 12-2 behind Ben Zultok’s seven-point performance.

In their weekly senior hockey countdown, the Monday Nooner Podcast had the Wheat Kings pegged at seventh in their provincial rankings for the second straight week. Rosthern is the only team from the TRHL to make the rankings so far this season.

“They have a nice little team out there,” said the panel.

On top of leading the team in points, both Zultok and Brayden Anderson lead the league in points with 20 each, where Zultok boasts 13 goals and seven assists while Anderson has two goals and 18 assists. Not far behind is Aidan Arnold with 15 points, and Aaron Campbell and Mitchell Rosko with eight each.

Between the pipes, Kristjan Johnson has posted a 3-0-0 record with 2.33 GAA and a .921 SV%, and backup Nathan Dancy also dons a 3-0-0 record to pair with a 3.57 GAA and .897 SV%. Third-string netminder Blake Martin has appeared in just one game this season, collecting a win with a 2.00 GAA and .920 SV%.

According to the league website, Rosthern played their last game on Dec. 6 and won’t hit the ice until the New Year when they face off with Shellbrook on Jan. 3. With playoffs in February, the Wheat Kings will play nine games in January with their final game of the regular season set for Jan. 31 against their rivals from down the road, Hague.
