Third period explosion powers Red Wings to win over Wolverines
Fans at the Warman Home Centre Communiplex may need treatment for whiplash after what they witnessed on Saturday night as the Weyburn Red Wings struck six times in the third period en route to a stunning 7-5 win over the Warman Wolverines.
After building a 4-1 lead through a strong 40 minutes of play, the Wolverines saw their hard work come undone in a span of less than five minutes early in the final frame with the Red Wings comeback sparked by a pair of delay of game penalties to Pherson Loehndorf and Owen Parks 18 seconds apart. Josh Sale netted his 13th goal of the season on the ensuing 5-on-3 power play, then Drew Molde scored his 10th of the year with Parks still in the box to trim the deficit to one.
The Wings were just getting started. Less than a minute later, Jaxson Doyle potted his fifth of the season –and third against Warman — to even the score at four. Adam Savage Keller then pushed Weyburn in front with his first career SJHL goal and just 24 seconds after that, Ryder Rommelaere capitalized on a defensive zone turnover before beating Wolverines netminder Griffin Wright for his third of the season. When the smoke cleared, the Red Wings had scored five times in a span of 4:34 to turn a 4-1 deficit into a 6-4 lead.
It was a stark contrast to the first two periods. Warman opened the scoring for just the seventh time this season at 17:35 of the opening frame on Bennett Leibel’s first goal with the Wolverines since being acquired from Flin Flon earlier in the season. Riley Rich-Holden doubled the lead 65 seconds later with his 10th tally of the season, beating Weyburn netminder Nate Stevens to give the Wolverines a 2-0 lead after one.
