Broncos break through late to defeat Wolverines

The Warman Wolverines made a one-goal lead stand up for two periods but the dam broke in the third as the Humboldt Broncos scored three times in the final frame to earn a 3-1 win at the Warman Home Centre Communiplex on Sunday.

Bennet Leibel scored the lone Wolverines goal while Jeter Korte netted the equalizer and assisted on the go-ahead marker for the Broncos.

On the heels of a 7-4 victory over the Yorkton Terriers on Saturday that saw Warman open the scoring on the game’s opening shift, the hosts once again grabbed the early lead as Leibel converted a perfect two-on-one pass from Ethan Dundas for his fifth goal of the season just 1:53 into the contest. The teams traded chances for the rest of the opening period but Wolverines goaltender Griffin Wright and his Broncos counterpart, Charlie Tritt, combined for 25 saves to keep the score 1-0 Warman after one.

Despite his strong start, Wright was forced to leave the game due to illness prior to the second period, thrusting backup Nicholas Goodwin into his first SJHL action. The rookie netminder showed no signs of nerves, stopping all eight shots he faced in the frame. However, the Wolverines failed to give him any extra offensive support, generating just four shots of their own.

Early in the third, an old nemesis returned to haunt the Wolverines as they were whistled for two delay of game penalties in 16 seconds for firing the puck over the glass The same scenario played out on December 13 when the Weyburn Red Wings scored on both parts of the ensuing five-on-three power play to key a five-goal outburst in a 7-5 comeback win over Warman.

Once again, the visitors capitalized on the opportunity as Korte took a pass in the slot and fired a shot over Goodwin’s shoulder to level the score. While the Broncos did not match the Red Wings’ feat with a goal on the second delay of game penalty, the tide had still turned as a few minutes later they caught another break with Logan Flint picking up a rebound off the end boards and slotting it home to put Humboldt in front 2-1.

The Wolverines pushed for a late equalizer, generating a number of chances with Goodwin on the bench for an extra attacker, but Tritt held firm before Rylan Hue scored into the empty net with eight seconds left to nail down the victory. Tritt finished the night with 24 saves while Goodwin stopped 18 of 20 shots in his SJHL debut. Wright blocked all 14 shots that he faced before falling ill.

Korte’s goal was the only power play marker on seven Humboldt chances while Warman failed to convert on two man advantage opportunities.

It’s the third time in their inaugural season that the Wolverines have missed a chance to win three consecutive games, falling to 9-22-2 with the loss. The Broncos now hold a 3-1 edge in the season series between the teams and sit at 16-12-2 overall.

The Wolverines will return to action next weekend when they travel to Estevan for a two-game set against the Bruins on Friday and Saturday. Every Wolverines game can be heard live on SaskNow.com.
