Bruins sweep weekend set with Wolverines

Ewan Rennie scored multiple goals for a second straight game and Colton Getzlaff tallied twice as the Estevan Bruins completed a two-game weekend sweep of the Warman Wolverines with a 7-2 victory on Saturday at Affinity Place in Estevan.

The Wolverines were looking for revenge on the Bruins after a nine-goal third period bonanza on Friday night which gave Estevan a 9-1 win in the teams’ second matchup of the season. Warman saw another player make his debut with the club as Brady Keith skated in his first ever SJHL game after coming in from the Prairie Hockey Academy.

Rennie got the Bruins up and running in the first period with his league-leading 26th goal of the season, ending the Wolverines five-game game-opening goal streak. Getzlaff then fired in his first of the night and Cash Olsen collected his 11th of the season to put the Bruins up 3-0 after 20 minutes of play.

Estevan goaltender Nathan Kam, who was in net against the Wolverines back on December 6, was on a shutout bid until Carter Bergen put a stop to that with a power play goal to put Warman on the board at 3-1 in the second. But Rennie restored the three-goal cushion, giving him back-to-back two goal games to make it 4-1 in favour of the Bruins after two.

The hosts kept piling on in the final frame, scoring three straight goals with Nathaniel Harvey, Getzlaff and Rylan Williams each finding the back of the net to build a 7-1 lead.

The Wolverines wouldn’t back down easily as Vincent Palmarin fired home his fifth goal of the season to make it 7-2 but Kam and the Bruins shut the door the rest of the way to secure back-to-back wins.

Estevan is now 3-0 when facing the Wolverines this season and will aim to complete a sweep of the season series on February 21 in Warman. The Wolverines, who dropped their third in a row, remain fourth in the Nutrien Division at 9-24-2 and take up 11th place in the SJHL standings while the Bruins maintain their hold on second in the Bunge Division and fifth overall at 20-11-3.

The Wolverines return to the Warman Home Centre Communiplex on Friday to begin a home-and-home series with the Battlefords North Stars at 7 p.m. Every Wolverines home and away game can be heard live on SaskNow.com.
