Twin Rivers Curling Club receives $10K through annual donation

With junior curling numbers on the rise, a longtime partnership between the Battlefords Hotel Association and Twin Rivers Curling Club is helping ensure the sport remains accessible to the community.

For each of the last three years, the association has donated $10,000 to help support the club year-round, with the funding typically used for paying utilities.

However, Brandon Hall, the manager of Twin Rivers Curling Club, said this year the money will also go towards equipment.

“Our junior program has doubled in size in the last year. So, we’re needing to purchase equipment and stuff to cover that,” he said.

“In our junior instructional, there’s 24, but there’s over 200 kids a week that come through here currently.”

Hall explained it is important to the club to be able to keep fees for the programs as affordable as possible so that it doesn’t restrict anyone in the community from participating in the sport.

Darin Manegre, co-owner and operator of Comfort Inn and Suites, said the Battlefords Hotel Association originally wanted to give back to the club due to an increase in people using city accommodations for events.

“We like to see different people coming to town. People are spending money at different businesses like the restaurants, the different malls, and they’re getting gas. Anything we put money towards, we feel really good about,” he said.

Heading further into the curling season, the club will host six spiels that are open to athletes across the province. A spiel is played in a tournament-style where teams participate in several games, often in a round-robin or elimination bracket.

Hall said overall this season has been good, with leagues carrying on as normal.

“We always have room for people, whether you’re a single or a whole team. We can find places for you; you don’t have to be experienced. We have a constant rotating fun league that’s six weeks long, and we’re always looking for new curlers. There’s no experience necessary,” he said.
