The Battlefords United Football Club (BUFC) has fared well in recent tournaments, and now they’re looking forward to hosting one of their own: the Little Legends Tournament is the first U9 and U11 competition in the history of the club.

Recently in Regina, the U17 boys team took home the gold medal with a 4-3 win over QC United Taiye. The team finished with three wins, a draw and a loss at the FCR Winterfest, a tournament which club director Kat Huxley said they don’t attend often.

“It was good to go to a new tournament in a new environment for most of those athletes.”

The club also had three teams attend the East Side tournament on weekend of Jan. 10. The D3 U15 girls team and U13/U15 took home the gold medal, while the D3 U15 boys team won the silver.

After bringing home some hardware, the club is excited to host the Little Legends Tournament. The weekend of Jan. 23-25 is the U11 tournament, while Jan. 30 – Feb. 1 is when the U9 teams will meet.

“We’ve put in a lot of hard work. Our planning committee…tournament committee have put in a lot of work. The fieldhouse has been fantastic to work with, like some small updates. So getting new nets, repainting the lines on the turf, things like that,” said Huxley.

“We have some teams from Lloydminster, some teams from Saskatoon, a team from the RM of Wilton.”

The kids participating are also ecstatic to be hosting at home.

“We host a lot of exhibition games, so that’s not something that’s out of our wheelhouse. But we’re just excited to be able to showcase a Sask Soccer-sanctioned event within our city and at our facility that we use,” Huxley said.

They will have a raffle for various items such as a Nintendo Switch, a World Cup soccer ball, a Starbucks package, along with tickets to Saskatoon Rush and Blades games.

They have various whistle and event sponsors as well as a hydration station, which Huxley said she’s never seen in a tournament. “They’ll have an unlimited amount of things like Gatorade. They’ll have big jugs of Gatorade for athletes to come fill their water bottles.”

The club looks forward to hosting this tournament before hosting the SSA Futsal provincials from Feb. 27 – Mar. 1.

“Continuing to showcase how important and valuable soccer is in our community and how much the community very much enjoys soccer.”
