Broncos name new leadership group

The Humboldt Broncos have a few new leaders among their team for the rest of the season.

Humboldt announced a new leadership group earlier this week, after trading away some of their previous captains at the deadline.

“I think it was important to still have a leadership group. I know it’s a different group than what started off the year, but I think it’s important for those others to know who they can lean on in that room to lead. I thought that’s why we chose who we chose in that situation,” explained Broncos Head Coach Brayden Klimosko.

“Our new group seems excited; it’s definitely not doom and gloom here, where we’re thinking we have no shot. We’re playing to win, we’re playing to get in the playoffs, and we’re trying to do all that, so they know that they need to push in every regard, and they’re really excited about the challenge here.”

The Green and Gold’s newest captain is third-year forward and former assistant captain, Brayden Skogstad.

Through 34 games this season, the 2005-born, Kelowna, B.C. native has three goals and nine assists for 12 points.

“Yes, he had an ‘A’ before, but the guy just lives and breathes Bronco hockey. He understands what the culture is here and what we need here to succeed. Everyone likes him. He’s an easy guy to talk to, and he’ll also hold people accountable if need be, so a pretty easy choice there,” Klimosko said.

Next up is assistant captain Marik Mamic, who was already wearing an ‘A’ to begin the season, and is in his third year with the team.

The 2005-born forward from Quesnel, B.C., just recently returned from a lengthy injury, having put up just one point through four games thus far.

“A guy that plays the game the right way, and is a very easy-going and positive guy in there. He dealt with an injury last summer, so just going through his experiences, I’m sure, will benefit the guys in there,” Klimosko told northeastNOW.

Another assistant is Rylan Hue, who has already played parts of three seasons in Humboldt, despite being just 18 years of age.

The 2007-born forward from Saskatoon has seven goals and three assists in 10 contests this year.

“He’s just a full-on workhorse, works hard every day, on and off the ice, so just another guy to lean on that knows what Bronco hockey is all about,” continued Klimosko.

And finally, Nathan Da Silva will also be an alternate captain in his first season with the Broncos.

The 2006-born defenceman from Surrey, B.C. was acquired earlier in the year from the La Ronge Ice Wolves, having accumulated two goals and an assist in 11 matches with the Green and Gold this campaign.

“Da Silva’s a leader back there on the back end, and is going to need to play some major minutes for us here, down the stretch. Just a guy that we’re going to be relying on heavily, not only this year, but next year as well,” Klimosko said.

The Humboldt Broncos are next in action Friday night when they visit the Weyburn Red Wings.
