Weekend preview: Raiders staying in Saskatchewan for third 3-in-3 weekend

The Prince Albert Raiders are on a four-game winning streak as they get set for three games in three nights. It starts tonight when they head to Moose Jaw to take on the Warriors. On Friday, they are in Swift Current to face the Broncos, and will return home on Saturday to play host to the Medicine Hat Tigers.

The Raiders come into the weekend as the top team in the East Division, still just one point back of the Medicine Hat for the first place spot in the Eastern Conference. On the season, the Raiders record sits at 32-6-4 (Wins-Losses-Overtime Losses).

On Tuesday, the Raiders defeated Victoria 12-2; it was the most goals they’ve scored in a single game since 1995. That was followed by an 8-5 win in Medicine Hat, a 3-1 win in Lethbridge, and a 5-2 win over Brandon. The Raiders have also won 10 of their last 11 games.

On special teams, the Raiders are still sitting third in the league at 30.5 per cent on the year. As for the penalty kill, they’re sitting 11th in the league at 79.6 per cent.

Daxon Rudolph at 20G-30A-50P and Aiden Oiring with 19G-31A-31P lead the team in scoring. Then there’s a tie for third between Riley Boychuk at 10G-36A-46P and Brandon Gorzynski at 19G-27A-46P.

In goal, Michal Orsulak got the win on Tuesday to improve his record to 13-4-3 on the year, but his save percentage has trickled down to 0.898 with a 2.53 goals against average and two shutouts this year.

Steele Bass will likely get at least one start on the weekend; he has a perfect 6-0-0 record, a 0.921 save percentage, 1.50 goals against average, and one shutout this year.

Thursday @ Moose Jaw

This will be just the second meeting of the season between the Raiders and Moose Jaw Warriors. That first meeting came back on Nov. 1 when the Raiders won 6-4. Including Thursday’s game, the Raiders and Warriors play each other five more time this year.

The Warriors occupy the seventh playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with a record of 17-22-4 on the year. This is the first game for the Warriors since returning from their U.S. road trip, and they’ve won their two most recent games in overtime 5-4 in Spokane and 3-2 in Seattle. On the trip as a whole, the Warriors went 3-3.

Looking at special teams, the Warriors have the 11th ranked powerplay in the league at 25.2 per cent. Their penalty kill is a little lower at 19th in the league at 70.5 per cent.

There’s also a tie at the top of the Warriors scoring between Landen McFadden at 18G-26A-44P and Pavel McKenzie with 12G-32A-44P. Behind them are Aiden Ziprick with 12G-26A-38P and Ethan Semeniuk with 10G-22A-32P.

Finally in goal, the Warriors acquired Chase Wutzke early in the year and he’s been the team’s main starter with a record of 10-13-1 on the year, a 0.902 save percentage, 3.27 goals against average, and one shutout on the year.

Behind him is American 18-year-old Kyle Jones with a 5-10-3 record, a 0.869 save percentage, and a 4.61 goals against average.

The Raiders and Warriors battle on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Friday @ Swift Current

The Raiders have beat up on the Broncos going a perfect 6-0 against Swift Current this year. Including Friday’s game, the Raiders will play the Broncos two more times this season.

The Broncos will head into the weekend as the last-ranked team in the WHL with a record of 10-30-3, just two points back of Lethbridge. The Broncos will come into Friday’s game on a full week of rest after a 4-3 overtime win in Saskatoon, but they had lost their last five in a row before that.

On the powerplay, the Broncos are operating at 18.9 per cent, tied with Tri-City for 18th in the league. Their penalty kill is the only penalty kill in the league below 70 per cent, sitting last in the league at 66.7 per cent.

Hudson Darby leads the Broncos in scoring with 9G-17A-26P, followed by Trae Wilke at 12G-12A-24P. Tied for third are Stepan Kuryachenkov with 11G-11A-22P and Anthony Wilson with 9G-13A-22P.

Finally, between the pipes for the Broncos has been Aiden Eskit, who comes into the weekend with a record of 0-11-1, a 0.860 save percentage, and a 5.36 goals against average.

Behind him is Archer Cooke, who has a record of 2-3-2 in just seven games with the Broncos this year. He has a 0.878 save percentage and a 3.82 goals against average.

The sixth matchup of the season between the Raiders and Broncos goes Friday in Swift Current at 7 p.m.

Saturday vs. Medicine Hat

This is the fourth and final meeting of the regular season between the Raiders and the Tigers. Most recently, the Raiders came out of Medicine Hat with an 8-5 win on Jan. 17. In the previous two meetings, the Tigers won 3-2 in a tightly contested game in Prince Albert Nov. 29, and the Tigers won again in a 7-1 blowout Dec. 3.

The Tigers are just one point ahead of the Raiders in the Eastern Conference with a record of 32-7-5 on the year. Since the Raiders snapped the Tigers 19-game winning streak on Saturday, the Tigers won 4-3 on Tuesday over Calgary, and they will play on Friday against Saskatoon.

The Tigers powerplay is sitting second in the league right now at 31.9 per cent on the year. They also boast the league’s third best penalty kill at 81.1 per cent, tied with Edmonton and Seattle for the most shorthanded goals in the league with nine.

The four leading scorers for the Tigers are amongst the top seven scorers in the league. Liam Ruck sits third in the league at 26G-37A-63P. Tied for fourth are Bryce Pickford with 33G-29A-62P, and Markus Ruck with 11G-51A-62P. Sitting seventh in the league is Jonas Woo with 24G-37A-61P.

Medicine Hat plays on Friday in Saskatoon, so the following point streaks may change ahead of Saturday’s game.

Jordan Switzer has the most starts this season for the Tigers, he has a record of 21-4-3 on the year, along with a 0.896 save percentage, a 2.70 goals against average, and one shutout on the year.

Carter Casey is the Tigers backup with a 11-3-2 record, a 0.876 save percentage and a 3.32 goals against average, and one shutout this year.

The Raiders will be back on home ice Saturday to welcome the Tigers for the fourth and final matchup of the season at 7 p.m.

All three games this weekend will be broadcast on 900 CKBI and Brandt Raider Radio starting with the pregame show at 6:30 p.m.
