Snow Pirates gearing up for provincial racing event in support of local charity

A Prince Albert snowmobile show is donating a portion of their proceeds back into the community.

For the fourth year in a row, the Prince Albert Snow Pirates are preparing for their annual vintage drag races, where old snowmobiles go head-to-head in a series of timed events to see which one still has the most kick.

Event organizer Vanessa Brahniuk said the races attract people from near and far.

“We’ve had up to 200 racers entered in the race before and have had a lot of spectators of all ages, young and old. There are three, maybe four other races around Saskatchewan, but they are mostly down south.”

The races are unique in the fact that all of the competing snowmobiles must have engines and chassis from 1981 or before. All machines will be inspected prior to the start of the races, which will be split into different classes for age and engine type. A concession with a 50/50 draw will also be on site. The event is set for Feb. 28, with awards and a banquet to follow later in the evening.

As tradition with the event, a portion of the proceeds made will go back into the community as a form of a charity donation, with this year’s charity being the Rose Garden Hospice.

“We don’t need a lot of profit for our club,” explained Brahniuk. “We just need the funds to get it started, which we go to a lot of local businesses in Prince Albert, and they donate to the race knowing that a portion of the proceeds will go back to the Rose Garden Hospice. It’s a win-win for everybody.”

Brahniuk, whose family is three generations into the sport, said there are hopes to turn the one-day racing event into a two-day spectacle with oval racing. But for now, she said it’s enough fun to drag race down their 660-foot strip.

“We have talked about doing oval races, I’m not sure what that’s going to look like. There are a couple down south that do that already.”

The event is still looking for volunteers to work and sponsors for the different classes. Those interested can contact Guy for more information at 306-981-2334.
