After picking up four wins in five nights last week, the Prince Albert Raiders had two days to rest before getting back in action on the road to take on the Moose Jaw Warriors. The Raiders had some sloppy moments throughout the game, but ultimately they’d take their eighth straight win 4-3.

The Warriors started the scoring in the first period on their first powerplay of the game. At 3:32, Landen McFadden and Connor Schmidt worked the puck back to Aiden Ziprick in the middle of the blueline, and he fired around a screen to give the Warriors the lead.

The Raiders tied it at the 12:20 mark. Jonah Sivertson wasn’t credited for an assist, but he was tied up on the left wall of the offensive zone and he took a hit that freed the puck towards the corner. Max Heise tracked it down and centered it for Maddix McCagherty in the slot for a onetimer and McCagherty’s 14th of the season.

At the 18:48 mark, the Warriors took the lead back. With Daxon Rudolph taking the puck up the ice, the rest of the Raiders decided to change. Rudolph was outnumbered at the red line, the Warriors took over, and Landen McFadden was given a clear lane to the left slot while the Raiders off the bench hustled to catch up, but McFadden’s shot hit the back of the net before they could catch up.

After 1: Raiders 1 – 2 Warriors, shots 11-7 Raiders

Down by two, the Raiders came out firing in the early second period. At the 2:34 mark, Alisher Sarkenov picked off a pass as the Warriors were trying to leave the zone. Sarkenov quickly turned around into the left slot, then fired a wrist shot bar down for his 13th of the season unassisted.

At the 4:07 mark, the Raiders powerplay scored on their first opportunity of the game. Braeden Cootes worked for a puck down low in the corner and helped get it free for Max Heise. He was in a decent position shoot near the bottom of the slot, but there were bodies in the way, so instead he found the passing lane back to the right point for Brandon Gorzynski who hammered a onetimer for his 23rd of the year.

The Warriors would tie it again before the end of the period on their second powerplay of the game. This time it was Pavel McKenzie from the left point that sent the puck down low for Landen McFadden, and he fired a onetimer for his second of the night to tie the game.

After 2: Raiders 3 – 3 Warriors, shots 13-8 Raiders, 24-15 Raiders overall

The third period saw dominant control from the Raiders all period long, and they took the lead again at the 5:02 mark. Matyas Man helped stop a clearing effort by the Warriors and got the puck ahead to Ben Harvey coming in on the left side on a tightly contested 2-on-1. Harvey got a shot away that bounced off the goaltender’s pad into the air, and Connor Howe coming in from the other side swatted the puck out of the air for his fourth of the season and the game winner.

The Raiders outpaced the Warriors all period and earned four straight powerplays in the period, including two near the end that made it impossible for the Warriors to exit their zone, and the Raiders took their eighth straight win.

FINAL: Raiders 4 – 3 Warriors, shots 16-2 Raiders, 40-17 Raiders overall

With the win, the Raiders maintain their four point gap at the top of the Eastern Conference standings over the Medicine Hat Tigers. The Raiders also move into first place in the WHL, sitting one point ahead of the Everett Silvertips, but the Silvertips have a game in hand over the Raiders.

With two assists on the night, Max Heise has now extended his team leading point streak to seven games with 5G-8A. Braeden Cootes extended his streak to four games (2G-3A), and Alisher Sarkenov extended his to three games (2G-2A).

The Raiders now have three days off before they get set for a weekend home and home series with the Saskatoon Blades starting on Saturday in Prince Albert.
