Mustangs extend point streak, snap North Stars

In one fell swoop, the Melfort Mustangs both extended their now six-game point streak on Tuesday night, while ending the previous 11-game point streak of the Battlefords North Stars.

Melfort went into North Battleford and climbed away with yet another one-goal road win, this time by a score of 4-3.

“These one-goal wins are a little bit stressful as a coach, but it doesn’t matter if we win five nothing or five four or one nothing because they all count the same. We did a really good job of locking it down towards the end, we had a little bit of a slip-up, and then it got a little closer than it needed to, but it is what it is because we did what we needed to do,” explained assistant coach Clarke Huxley.

“This is what we want to be known as, and I think it’s what a lot of teams have viewed us over the years, and that’s hard work. Plays where our guys shouldn’t have a chance, but they work really hard and don’t stop moving their feet and put themselves into those positions.”

Of the last six games that the Mustangs have gotten at least a point, four of them have come on the road, all of which were one-goal victories.

A common theme in those contests is outshooting their opponents, as the club had another 39 pucks on net on Tuesday, which was 10 more than their opponent.

“Goals don’t come easy, and before this bit of a stretch we’ve been on, it was tough to score, and sometimes at points, it still is. I think just really bearing down when we get those chances, making sure we’re getting shots on net, and getting those second and third opportunities. The last few games, we haven’t been lighting up the score sheet, but we’ve capitalized when we need to, and it’s resulted in wins,” Huxley added.

With the win, the Stangs also secured the season-series, as they are now 3-1 against North Battleford on the year.

Next up for the Blue and Green is the Hawks on Friday in Nipawin, as they search for their first victory in the Cage this campaign.
