Late outburst lifts Wolverines to win over Ice Wolves

A four-goal third period turned the tide as the Warman Wolverines rebounded from a shutout loss in their previous outing to defeat the La Ronge Ice Wolves 5-4 on Wednesday night at the Warman Home Centre Communiplex.

The Wolverines needed less than three minutes to turn a one-goal deficit into a three-goal lead before holding off a late Ice Wolves comeback effort, winning for just the second time this season when trailing after two periods.

“It felt really good. We had a talk in the second intermission there and we all agreed that we had to step up and the older guys kinda led the way a little bit and the younger guys carried as well,” said Peyton Allard, who scored twice to pace the Warman attack.

After being thoroughly outplayed in a 6-0 home loss to the Nipawin Hawks last Friday, the Wolverines roared out of the gate against the Ice Wolves, firing the first nine shots of the game and opening the scoring 2:17 into the contest on Carter Bergen’s team-leading 12th goal of the season. The back half of the frame turned into a penalty fest but neither team could capitalize on its power play chances, and Warman took the 1-0 advantage into the first intermission.

Both squads settled down in the second period and the Ice Wolves seized control with goals by Oliver Christiansen and Theron Watteyne less than four minutes apart. Warman peppered La Ronge netminder Graham Brown with 15 shots in the frame but the veteran held firm, keeping the visitors in front after 40 minutes of play.

But the Wolverines found their offensive footing in a big way in the third. Oliver Nottingham leveled the score with his seventh of the season on a Warman power play, then 33 seconds later Allard connected for his fifth to put the home side back in front.

Less than two minutes later, Vincent Palmarin netted his eighth of the year with a highlight-reel effort as he carried the puck in deep and appeared to be heading behind the net but instead tucked a shot behind Brown and inside the post. Allard capped the outburst with his second of the game 28 seconds after that, sneaking a sharp-angle shot past the La Ronge goaltender, giving Warman four goals in a span of 2:53.

“It was pretty awesome (to score). I’ve been in a bit of a drought but to get out of that felt great,” Allard said.

As it turned out, the Wolverines needed all four goals. Dayton Tailfeathers tried to rally the Ice Wolves with a shorthanded tally and an even strength marker in a three-minute stretch later in the frame but that’s as close as La Ronge would get. A Ryder McKinnon kneeing major with just under two minutes to play snuffed out the late comeback effort as Warman closed out the game on the man advantage and held on for the win.

Taye Timmerman returned to the Warman crease for the first time since November 30 following his recovery from a lower body injury and turned aside 24 shots to earn his fifth win of the season. Brown, who celebrated his 21st birthday on Wednesday, made 42 saves in defeat. The Wolverines converted one of seven power plays while the Ice Wolves failed to score on three man advantage opportunities.

The Wolverines are back in action on Friday when they visit the Humboldt Broncos in the first of a home-and-home series. The rematch takes place the following night in Warman. Every Wolverines game is broadcast live on SaskNow.com
