Nathan Da Silva scored the game winner 31 seconds into overtime as the Humboldt Broncos snapped a six-game home losing skid in a back-and-forth 5-4 victory over the Warman Wolverines at Elgar Petersen Arena in Humboldt.

Warman entered Friday’s game after winning another tight contest 5-4 over the La Ronge Ice Wolves on home ice two nights earlier.

Oliver Nottingham started the scoring with his fourth power play goal of the campaign to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead in the first period. The Broncos would respond on a man advantage of their own late in the opening frame when Morgan Hackman fired home his first career SJHL goal, leveling the score at 1-1 after 20 minutes of play with the shots 15-14 for the Wolverines.

After a scoreless second period, the Broncos went ahead in the third with Tyce Penrod firing in his ninth goal of the season. The home side further extended its lead when Rylan Hue netted his eighth of the year to make it 3-1.

The tides began to turn when Pherson Loehndorf tallied his ninth goal of the season and Nottingham added another powerplay goal to tie the game at three. Kanyan Unger then gave the Wolverines their second lead of the game at the 15:26 mark with his second of the campaign, assisted by fellow Warman native Trey Markus to make it 4-3 for the Wolverines.

The visitors were on the verge of securing the victory but Oliver Phillips found the back on the net with just over a minute left in regulation to send the teams to overtime, where Da Silva played the hero, delivering the Broncos their first home win since December 6.

The Broncos lead the season series with the Wolverines 4-1 with three more meetings on the schedule.

Warman suffered its first overtime loss in franchise history and missed an opportunity to gain some ground on their divisional rivals. The Wolverines sit fourth in the Nutrien Division and 11th in the overall standings at 11-26-1-2. The Broncos are third in the division at 18-19-1-1 and make the hop to ninth overall in the SJHL.

The two teams are back at it again on Saturday night as they wrap up their home-and-home set at the Warman Home Centre Communiplex, with puck drop scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Every Wolverines home and away game can be heard on SaskNow.com.
