Wolverines outscore Ice Wolves to snap five-game skid

It wasn’t always pretty but the Warman Wolverines got the job done as they held off the La Ronge Ice Wolves for a 6-5 win on Tuesday night at Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre.

Kayden Yeaman and Peyton Allard tallied three points apiece and Taye Timmerman made 29 saves as the Wolverines snapped a five-game skid and secured a 3-1 season series win over the SJHL’s last-place club.

It was the home side who got the early jump, however, with Grayden Perozni scoring just 57 seconds into the game after a strong opening shift. The lead lasted less than three minutes though with Carter Bergen beating Ice Wolves netminder Riley Zezel for his team-leading 14th goal of the season to knot the score at one.

La Ronge pushed back in front later in the frame on Evan Cook’s ninth of the year. Once again the Wolverines had a quick response, as Peyton Allard cut off a clearing attempt along the right wing boards and snapped a shot past Zezel for his seventh of the campaign. Yeaman followed that up with his fifth of the season, scoring with 24 seconds left in the period to put Warman ahead 3-2 after one.

The Lake Newell Resort, Alta., product made it back-to-back goals to begin the second, converting a two-on-one feed from Allard with a nifty backhand finish. Three of Yeaman’s six goals this season have come at the JRMCC.

This time the Ice Wolves replied in short order, with Dayton Tailfeathers tipping home his team-leading 14th goal just over a minute later to pull La Ronge back within one.

Owen Parks restored the two-goal cushion with his fifth of the year at the 7:51 mark, chasing Zezel from the Ice Wolves net. The rookie goaltender finished the night with 17 saves on 22 shots. La Ronge wasted little time responding to the goalie switch with Perozni netting his second of the game just 50 seconds later.

Zezel’s replacement, Graham Brown, settled in nicely but the Wolverines got to him with a little over five minutes to go in the period after a Jared Bigelow shot deflected off Nate Crashley for his fifth goal of the season, putting Warman back ahead by two after 40 minutes of play.

The frenetic scoring pace finally slowed in the final period but not before Oliver Christiansen trimmed the deficit back to a single goal just over three minutes in. However, both goaltenders shut the door from there. The Wolverines got the game’s only two power plays later in the frame but failed to add to their lead, and a late push by the Ice Wolves with Brown on the bench for an extra skater came up short.

Warman outshot La Ronge 43-34 on the night as Timmerman picked up his sixth win of the season. Brown was tagged with the hard-luck loss, as the only goal he conceded on 21 shots turned out to be the game winner.

With the victory, the Wolverines have matched the win total of their predecessors, the Notre Dame Hounds, from their final season in Wilcox. Warman still has 11 games remaining to improve on that total, sitting 11th in the SJHL standings with a record of 12-28-5. La Ronge is nine points back in the league basement at 8-30-4.

The Wolverines continue their three-game road swing on Friday when they visit the Yorkton Terriers. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Westland Arena. Every Wolverines home and away game can be heard live on SaskNow.com.
