Family support spurs Wolverines to win over Bruins

Feb 22, 2026 | 1:33 AM

The Warman Wolverines might have to keep their folks around for a while longer. The team wrapped up its inaugural parents’ weekend on Saturday with a 2-1 victory over the Estevan Bruins, snapping a four-game skid in front of a home crowd that included dozens of family members.

Cam Sarna scored the winning goal on a third-period power play and Griffin Wright made 33 saves as the Wolverines prevented the Bruins from sweeping the season series between the two teams.

After being shut out in North Battleford one night earlier, the Wolverines wasted little time rediscovering their scoring touch against the Bruins, with Oliver Nottingham setting up a wide open Riley Rich-Holden for his 12th goal of the season — and first in 18 games — just over five minutes into the contest.

The second period belonged to the visitors as Estevan controlled the majority of play and leveled the score midway through on Carter Onrait’s fourth goal of the year. However, despite considerable efforts to grab the lead, the Bruins could not get another puck past Wright, who turned aside 18 shots in the frame.

“It really was flow state. Not really thinking about anything too specific but feeling good, watching all the pucks in front of me. There were a lot of shots but I feel like despite that, the d zone did a really good job of keeping the big chances to a minimum,” Wright said.

The Wolverines regained their offensive footing in the third and were handed an opportunity to jump back in front when Estevan’s Colton Getzlaff clipped Warman defenceman Jared Bigelow with a high stick, resulting in a double minor penalty. Sarna proceeded to bury his 11th goal of the season on the front half of the ensuing power play.

Wright made sure the lead stood up, holding firm over the final ten minutes to secure his sixth win of the season. The Edmonton-born goaltender said having his parents in attendance for one of his best games as a Wolverine made the win that much more special.

“It’s incredible. They’ve supported me since day one. This year they’ve only come out to three or four (games) but that means they mean all that much more so I’m really happy to have them out,” Wright said.

With their 13th victory of the campaign, the Wolverines surpassed the win total of the final season in their previous iteration as the Notre Dame Hounds. While it has already been eliminated from playoff contention, the team is relishing the opportunity to spoil its opponents’ postseason plans. Estevan is clinging to the eighth and final SJHL playoff spot following Saturday’s defeat, with the Kindersley Klippers and Humboldt Broncos hot on their heels.

“As a team, that’s our whole motivation is kinda getting back at these guys. They’ve taken games from us at the start of the year. Playing spoiler, upsetting their spots and just working hard so that we have an impact going into next season,” Wright said.

The Wolverines return to action on February 27 when they open a home-and-home set with the Klippers in Kindersley. The game can be heard live on SaskNow.com.
