Wright backstops Wolverines to second straight win

Griffin Wright delivered another strong performance in goal with 24 saves as the Warman Wolverines secured their first winning streak since early January with a 4-3 victory over the Kindersley Klippers in their final trip to the Inter Pipeline Events Centre this season.

The Wolverines came into the game with great momentum after Cam Sarna potted the game winner to snap a four-game losing skid with a victory over the Estevan Bruins last Saturday, and were the first to find the scoresheet for the second consecutive game when Carter Bergen put home his 15th goal on the power play to make it 1-0 just over six minutes into the game.

The Klippers responded moments later when Pryce Thiessen tallied his 14th of the season to level the score at a goal apiece, but Warman took the lead right back with Riley Rich-Holden and Kayden Yeaman scoring to put the Wolverines up 3-1 lead after 20 minutes of play.

The Klippers evened things up yet again in the second when Van Eger fired one in on the power play and Brock Evans capped off a two-point night with his 17th of the year.

But before the end of the frame, Oliver Nottingham buried his 12th goal of the season, one which would turn out to be the game winner following a scoreless third period.

The Wolverines picked up their second road win over the Klippers this season.

Despite taking six penalties on the night, Wolverines Head coach and General Manager Brett Pilkington praised the team’s effort in the victory.

“We got off to a fast start there and, you know, getting up 3-1 after one put us in a good spot. Obviously a penalty-filled second period for whatever reason and again, some calls you wouldn’t want to see, but that’s the name of the game,” he said.

“We just battled hard to the end.”

The Wolverines will wrap up their season series with the Klippers on Saturday night at the Warman Home Centre Communiplex with puck drop at 7:30pm.
