Broncos comeback sends Wolverines to offseason in defeat

The Warman Wolverines were looking to end their inaugural campaign on a high note but the Humboldt Broncos had other plans, scoring three straight goals in the third period to claim a 3-2 victory in the season finale for both teams.

Cam Sarna and Owen Parks scored for Warman but it was Kayson Christian’s tally with less than 90 seconds to play that made the difference as the Broncos closed out the season with back to back wins over their Nutrien Division rivals.

Humboldt was eliminated from playoff contention one night earlier despite a 3-1 win in Warman, and the Broncos played like a team still absorbing that news in the first period of Saturday’s rematch. The Wolverines took advantage with Sarna finishing off a broken play for his 12th goal of the season with just over three minutes left in the frame.

Neither team found the scoreboard in the second but emotions ran high as a pair of fights erupted just a few seconds apart. First, Oliver Nottingham and Marik Mamic dropped the mitts, and moments later Bennett Leibel squared off with Logan Flint, bringing an early end to the season for all four players.

Leibel’s game misconduct left the Wolverines with just four defencemen for the rest of the game and fatigue on the blue line may have caught up to the visitors in the third. But not before Owen Parks notched his seventh goal of the year, jamming a rebound past Broncos netminder Matthew Bradley to put Warman up 2-0 early in the frame.

But the tide slowly began to turn, keyed by Kristian Lacelle’s third goal of the weekend to cut the deficit in half just past the eight-minute mark. Then with just over five minutes remaining and the Broncos on a power play, Teigan Semchyshen beat Wolverines goaltender Nick Goodwin to level the score.

Humboldt completed the comeback in the late stages as Cameron Grande caught the Wolverines on a slow line change, rifling a stretch pass to Christian, who broke in on Goodwin and fired a shot into the top corner of the net for the game-winning goal.

While both teams will miss the SJHL playoffs, the Broncos enjoyed plenty of success against the Wolverines this season, winning seven of their eight meetings including four one-goal victories. Humboldt wraps up the 2025-26 campaign with a record of 26-26-4, while Warman closes out its inaugural run at 14-36-6.

The 2026 postseason opens on Friday, March 20, with four quarterfinal series. The #1 seed Flin Flon Bombers will face the #8 Estevan Bruins, the #2 Yorkton Terriers will battle the #7 Melville Millionaires, the #3 Battlefords North Stars will take on the two-time defending champion and #6 seed Melfort Mustangs, and the #4 Nipawin Hawks will meet the #5 Weyburn Red Wings.
