Travel not recommended in some areas due to heavy snow

For springtime, it sure looks an awful lot like the middle of winter.

Heavy snow and strong winds continue to cause major headaches across much of the province today.

Travel is not recommended near Melfort, Nipawin,Tisdale, Kinistino, and Naicam areas, among others, due to heavy, drifting snow and icy conditions.

It’s much the same across northeast and central areas, with the heavy snow causing reduced visibility in areas like Humboldt as well.

Travel was not recommended on every highway out of Prince Albert as of 9:30 a.m. Friday morning. However, the Highway Hotline map did show that plows were out between Prince Albert and Macdowall on Hwy 11 and on Hwy 2 from St. Louis to Wakaw.

Highway 16 from Maidstone to Lloydminster was also listed as travel not recommended.

A snowfall warning is still in effect for Prince Albert, Melfort, Nipawin, Tisdale and Meadow Lake. The forecast is calling for 15 to 20 centimetres of snow by Saturday morning.

Around La Ronge and far north to Wolloston Lake, total snowfall accumulations are expected to be between 40 and 70 cm.

Environment Canada said temperatures will warm slightly over the coming days but will remain below the typical daytime high of 12 C that we usually see at this time of year.
