A woman has been arrested and another, after a long search, has been located unhurt in connection to an alleged vehicle robbery at gunpoint in Prince Albert early Thursday morning that ended with the stolen vehicle entering the North Saskatchewan River.

Prince Albert police said officers began investigating a robbery around 2:15 a.m. Thursday after receiving reports that a woman had been robbed of her vehicle at gunpoint in the 2700 block of Second Avenue East.

When officers arrived, they located two adult women who did not appear to be injured. The vehicle had already fled the scene.

Police said officers located the vehicle within minutes in the area of Marquis Road East and Fourth Avenue East. After officers activated their emergency equipment and attempted a traffic stop, the vehicle allegedly failed to stop.

Officers observed what appeared to be a female driver, and a pursuit was authorized because of the violent nature of the initial call, police said.

The vehicle continued east on Marquis Road East before turning north onto 15th Avenue East and then onto River Street East. At approximately 2:20 a.m., the vehicle entered the North Saskatchewan River.

Police were immediately on scene and observed two occupants from the vehicle in the water.

With assistance from the Prince Albert Fire Department’s rescue boat and an RCMP drone, officers located a 22-year-old woman on the riverbank a short distance east of where the vehicle entered the water.

Police identified the woman as the driver of the vehicle. She was taken to Victoria Hospital and treated for minor injuries before being arrested in connection with the incident.

The second female occupant was located later in the afternoon away from the scene and was not hurt.

Because police were involved prior to the vehicle entering the river, the Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) was initially asked to take over the investigation.

“Following an assessment of the circumstances, it was determined that the threshold for a Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) investigation was not met. As a result, SIRT is no longer involved in this matter,” police said in a statement Thursday afternoon.

The Prince Albert Police Service Major Crimes Unit continues to investigate the robbery, theft of vehicle, evade police and collision.
