A weekend of severe storms left a trail of damage across northeastern Saskatchewan, toppling thousands of trees, damaging buildings and knocking out power for thousands of residents as cleanup efforts continued Monday.

Communities including Aylsham, Codette, Arborfield, Carrot River and Kinistino reported extensive damage after powerful winds swept through the region Saturday.

Trees were snapped or uprooted throughout the area, with some falling onto homes, vehicles and power lines. Grain bins were overturned, roofs were damaged or torn off buildings and machinery and vehicles also sustained damage.

Power outages lasted from several hours to, in some cases, nearly two days.

As commercial power continued to be restored Monday, SaskTel said wireless service had returned to Marean Lake, Porcupine Plain, Greenwater, Weekes, Carrot River, Bertwell and Reserve shortly after 4 p.m.

Wireless voice service has also been restored in Ridgedale, Arborfield and areas east of Carrot River, although wireless data service in those areas remained impaired. SaskTel said full service is expected once commercial power has been completely restored.

One resident living about five kilometres east of Aylsham said he and his wife heard roughly 100 trees snapping around their five-acre property Saturday night.

Some of the fallen trees landed on vehicles and power lines. Despite leaving their windows open, the homeowner said there was little wind at the house itself, leading him to believe they may have been near the centre of the storm.

Pasquia Regional Park was also forced to begin another round of cleanup, with damage affecting its golf course. The park said the damage was not as extensive as the flooding it experienced in May.

Meanwhile, weather experts continue to assess the storms that swept across Saskatchewan.

The Northern Tornadoes Project has confirmed eight tornadoes from the weekend, including two that developed from the same storm near Glaslyn on Saturday night.

Six tornadoes have been confirmed from Friday, including near Dundurn, Plunkett, Cupar, Leross and two near Herzel. The organization is also investigating storm damage near Waldheim, Rosthern and Speers.

Environment Canada meteorologist Terri Lang said it appears there may have been more than 15 tornadoes between Friday and Saturday, although officials are still working to confirm the final number.

“It certainly was a busy weekend, and with the past number of years being so dry, it’s been relatively quiet with respect to severe weather,” Lang said.

“This year is particularly crazy with the amount of severe weather that we’ve had, and that’s fueled by all the water that we’ve gotten. The crops are in full bloom, so they’re giving off a tremendous amount of moisture. So that’s all coming together to make for a really busy season.”

For the first time in days, Saskatchewan had no weather alerts in effect Monday, other than a small area in the far southeast portion of the province for heat.
