Sask. Health Authority warns of swimmer’s itch at Candle Lake beach

Jeff’s Beach at Candle Lake is under a health advisory after cases of swimmer’s itch were reported. 

The Resort Village of Candle Lake warned the public about the issue on July 30. 

Most cases resolve on their own, but people may use antihistamines or baking soda baths to help relieve the itching. Swimmers should get medical advice if they develop symptoms of infection. 

Swimmer’s itch is caused by parasitic flatworms that begin in snails and generally move to ducks or other water birds. Sometimes, however, the parasites attach to humans in the water and try to burrow into the skin. They cannot survive in people, but the attempt can cause an allergic reaction that looks like mosquito bites.
