Swiatek tops Kostyuk, Shnaider upsets Pegula in Round of 16 play at NBO Toronto

TORONTO — Poland’s Iga Swiatek secured a quarterfinal berth at the National Bank Open on Saturday with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk.

Swiatek, the No. 7 seed, converted her sixth match point to complete the win over her 10th-seeded opponent. She’ll next play 15th-seeded Diana Shnaider of Russia, who upset third-seeded American Jessica Pegula 6-3, 6-3.

Top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus was to meet 16th-seeded Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova in the evening session. Eighth-seeded American Amanda Anisimova was to face ninth-seeded Ukrainian Elina Svitolina in the late match.

In doubles play, the fifth-seeded team of Su-Wei Hsieh of Taiwan and Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko defeated Norway’s Ulrikke Eikeri and American Quinn Gleason 6-4, 7-1 (1).
