Frantic finish propels Wolverines to overtime win

Trey Markus completed a hat trick with two goals in the final 30 seconds of the third period then set up Theron Bensler’s overtime winner as the Warman Wolverines beat the Yorkton Terriers 5-4 in a wild finish on Tuesday night in Warman.

The homegrown forward’s big night began just 50 seconds into the game when he netted his first of the season on the power play to open the scoring. Peyton Allard then added a shorthanded goal four minutes later to double the Wolverines’ advantage.

But the second period belonged to the Terriers as they responded with goals by Nathan Ramos, Jake Briltz, Alex Morrison and Aidan Vallance, the last coming on a power play, to take a 4-2 lead.

That score remained until the final minute of regulation, when Markus struck again. He converted off a goal-mouth scramble with 25 seconds left and Warman on a 4-on-3 power play plus an extra skater with goaltender Luke Brunen on the bench. Then after gaining control of the ensuing faceoff, Markus raced down the ice, circled the net and snuck a shot past Terriers netminder Callum Creig with 10 seconds remaining to level the score.
