Penalty kill stays strong as Wolverines defeat Ice Wolves

Special teams played a significant role as the Warman Wolverines downed the La Ronge Ice Wolves 3-1 on Wednesday night at the Warman Home Centre Communiplex.

Peyton Allard tallied a power play goal and an assist and the Wolverines successfully killed off nine minor penalties to help goaltender Evan Hutcheon earn the victory in his SJHL debut as Warman extended its point streak to seven games.

A choppy first period saw each team whistled for four minors, but neither power play managed to convert as the frame ended without a goal on the scoreboard.

The Wolverines drew first blood in the second as Benett Leibel scored his second goal of the season in his return to the lineup after being injured in the season opener. Warman doubled its lead later in the period with Sawyer Scheidt converting a two-on-one pass from Owen Parks after a turnover at the La Ronge blue line.

The game was delayed late in the frame after Ice Wolves defenceman Ryder McKinnon was injured by a hit along the end boards in the La Ronge zone. McKinnon stayed down on the ice for several minutes before eventually being removed on a stretcher as both teams retreated to their dressing rooms. The ice was then flooded before players returned for the final 3:48 of the period, then changed ends and continued on to the third.

In the final frame, the Ice Wolves had several opportunities with the man advantage including a pair of five-on-threes but could not capitalize. However, on a subsequent Wolverines power play, Ryder Wilm redirected a shot past Hutcheon for a shorthanded goal and his first in the SJHL to trim the deficit to one.

The Ice Wolves comeback effort was stymied just over a minute later though when Grayson Meyers was assessed a match penalty and a game misconduct for roughing after mixing it up with Warman’s Ryder Gilroy. Allard scored his third goal of the season on the ensuing major power play to provide the Wolverines with some insurance.

Warman continues to sit atop the SJHL standings early in the season, improving to 5-1-2 with the victory, while La Ronge has lost three straight games to fall to 1-4.

The Wolverines return to action on Friday when they visit the Kindersley Klippers. Catch every Wolverines game live on sasknow.com.
