Fire crews in northwest Saskatchewan are responding to a late-season wildfire within Meadow Lake Provincial Park.

The blaze was sparked on Wednesday near Kimball Lake and has since been dubbed the Kimball fire. According to the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency’s (SPSA) active incidents, the fire is roughly 64 hectares in size and was human-caused.

The SPSA said that crews are working near the fire’s perimeter using various pieces of equipment, like a helicopter, heavy machinery, and water trucks.

“Efforts are focused on hotspots near the perimeter, as well as pulling apart and extinguishing slash piles,” they said in an emailed response.

Residents online have posted about seeing water trucks from local fire departments heading towards the fire, as well as bulldozers being used to create a fire line. Waterhen Lake First Nation also posted to Facebook that the SPSA’s Dorintosh Fire Base is seeking Type 2 and Type 3 wildland firefighters in response to the Kimball fire.

At this time, no evacuation notices have been issued.
